Syrinx Journey Day 270: “Syrinx” after Brahms

I played Syrinx after attending a terrific concert by The Philadelphia Orchestra and Maestro Yannick NézetSéguin, featuring Brahms’s violin concerto with Gil Shaham, Janáček’s Sinfonietta, three of Dvořák‘s Slavonic Dances, and the “Adagio espressivo” movement from Schumann’s Symphony #2, offered as a memorial to former Music Director Wolfgang Sawallisch, who passed away in February. It was a wonderful concert as always.

Having just been engrossed in the sound worlds of Schumann, Brahms, Dvořák, and Janáček, Debussy sounded quite different when I returned to him. Yet because I am so steeped in Debussy with my daily ritual and other performances of his music, I hear strains of Debussy in the music of other composers more frequently.
